In this course students will learn basic late night comedy writing including monologue, desk pieces and remotes, with the goal of becoming technically proficient, confident and comfortable submitting material to various late night television programs. All with the emphasis of finding your unique voice as a comedy writer!

This class is taught by Gabe Abelson. Originally from New York City, GABE ABELSON spent 4-1/2 years as the head monologue writer for “Late Show with David Letterman”, garnering four Emmy nominations and three Writer’s Guild nominations. After his years at Letterman, Gabe relocated to the West Coast with his family, where he worked as staff writer at various network shows, including “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher” (ABC), "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" (NBC), “The Late, Late Show with Craig Kilborn” (CBS), in addition to having served as the producer / head writer for “The New Tom Green Show” (MTV). Gabe recently sold an animated feature to Dreamworks in conjunction with producer Jason Koornick (“Next”), Universal Press Syndicate and Andrews McMeel publishing. Previous to his career in television and movie writing, Gabe was an accomplished stand-up comedian and actor, touring the country and appearing on such shows as “Late Night With Conan O’Brien”, “The MTV Half-Hour Comedy Hour” (3 appearances), “Caroline’s Comedy Hour” (2 appearances), as well as numerous national commercials. For ten years, Gabe also taught a wildly popular class on stand-up comedy at “The Manhattan Punchline”, Broadways‘ only devoted-to-comedy theater.

TESTIMONIALS

“Not only is Gabe a very, very funny writer, but he is also a wonderful, inspiring teacher. He taught the comedy class that got me started in stand-up.”
- Gary Greenberg, Head Writer, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

“Gabe Abelson was my first and only teacher in stand up comedy. It was his knowledge of the art and the business that made for such a great class. He is a wonderful comic who showed me the way.”
- Eddie Pepitone, national headlining comedian who has appeared on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien”, “Weeds”, “The King Of Queens”, “Flight Of the Conchords” and in the movie “Old School”

“In addition to having a comprehensive understanding of the comedy writing science, able to deconstruct the art form down to its nuts and bolts, Gabe is also prolific in his writing production, and can churn out any number of jokes on a given subject.”
- Michael Barrie, head writer for “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, as well as numerous Carson anniversary shows, “The Academy Awards”, “Late Show with David Letterman”, “The Emmy Awards” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”

“When it comes to joke writing, nobody cuts to the punchline quicker then Gabe. One of the sharpest, most nimble minds I've ever teamed with.”
- Robert Oschack, stand-up star of his own “Comedy Central Presents” special, and staff writer for “Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson”, “Dennis Miller Live”, “The Showbiz Show with David Spade”, “Chocolate News”, and others
