Joan started off as a serious actress but quickly found her niche doing sharp-tongued stand-up on New York stages. By 1965 she was appearing on Johnny Carson's late night talk show, and by the end of that decade she was one of America's few nationally-known female comics.

Comedian Mitch Hedberg

Mitch Hedberg was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on February 24, 1968. He began his stand-up career in Florida, and after a period of honing his skills there he moved to Seattle and began touring. He soon appeared on MTV's "Comikaze", then a 1996 appearance on Late Night with David Letterman (1982) brought him his big break. He won the 1997 grand prize at the Seattle Comedy Competition. The next year saw him appearing on Fox's hit series That '70s Show (1998). In 1999 he completed his own independent feature film, Los Enchiladas! (1999), which he wrote, directed, produced and starred in. He has also recorded two comedy CDs entitled "Mitch All Together" and "Strategic Grill Locations". He has appeared at the 2001 Montreal Just For Laughs comedy festival. Mitch Hedberg died on March 30, 2005 of a drug overdose.

am Kinison was an American comedian born on December 8 1953 in Yakima, Washington. Known for his crass humor and trademark scream, Kinison received his first break from comedian Rodney Dangerfield. His popularity grew, earning him appearances on Late Night with David Letterman and Saturday Night Live. In 1988 Kinison received a Grammy nomination for his comedy album.

Known for his high-pitched voice, broad Massachusetts accent and trademark two-word condemnation (â€"Nay-nay!”) of all manner of deplorable things, Mr. Pinette toured widely and was a guest on â€"The Tonight Show” and â€"The View.” He dealt most often in comedy rooted in his own life — â€"the funniest thing that I can think of,” he often said.

He was also known for his brief but memorable turn in the series finale of â€"Seinfeld” in 1998 as the hapless victim of a carjacking. In that episode, seen by an estimated 76 million viewers, Mr. Seinfeld and his friends observe the crime but do nothing, leading to their arrest on charges of violating good Samaritan laws.

Phyllis Diller was born Phyllis Ada Driver in Lima, Ohio on July 17, 1917-Aug 20 2012 She had German and Irish ancestry (the surname "Driver" had been changed from "Treiber" several generations earlier). She was raised Methodist. Diller was a housewife, mother, and advertising copywriter. During World War II, she lived in Ypsilanti, Michigan while her husband worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant. In the mid-1950s, she made appearances on The Jack Paar Show and was a contestant on Groucho Marx's quiz show You Bet Your Life. Although she made her career in comedy, Diller had studied the piano for many years. She decided against a career in music after hearing her teachers and mentors play with much more skill than she thought that she would be able to achieve. She still played in her private life, however, and owned a custom-made harpsichord.

Known for her bawdy double entendres, West made a name for herself in vaudeville and on the stage in New York before moving to Hollywood to become a comedienne, actress and writer in the motion picture industry. One of the more controversial movie stars of her day, West encountered many problems, including censorship. When her cinematic career ended, she continued to perform in Las Vegas, in the United Kingdom, and on radio and television, and to record rock and roll albums. Asked about the various efforts to impede her career, West replied, "I believe in censorship. I made a fortune out of it.
