Writing For Late Night 2 - Desk Pieces, Sketches, & Remotes
Multi-Week Class

6pm to 9pm

After the opening monologue of a talk show, there are still 54 minutes of show
left—comedy bits, celebrity interviews and usually, a live performance by a band,
comedian or both. This class focuses on every aspect of comedy writing for late night
television: cold opens, desk bits, larger studio comedy pieces, games, audience pieces,
bumpers, drop-ins, field pieces and more. (We will cover every segment in late night
other than monologue, which is a separate class, as it demands all the focus of an
entire semester on its own. It is essential for aspiring late night writers to take both
classes in order to get a solid, comprehensive foundation and full understanding of late-
night writing.
In addition to learning how to write late night comedy, and how to submit to various
television shows, students will also take a deep dive behind the scenes, into how a late-
night talk show is constructed and produced on a day-to-day basis, and how the typical
day on a talk show is scheduled.
*NOTE* (It is highly recommended that you take the monologue writing class first, as it
will provide you with a firm foundation in writing the most concise form of humor there is.
Once a comedy writer hones their short form monologue-writing skills, it will allow them
to expand into much longer comedy pieces and genres. After all, desk bits, sketches
and large studio comedy pieces on talk shows, as different as they may appear from
monologue, are all basically frameworks on which to hang jokes. The same holds true
of sitcoms.). That said, there are several late night shows that have dedicated
monologue writers as well as dedicated bit writers. These shows will accept
submissions of JUST monologue jokes or JUST comedy bits for the rest of the show, in
case you’d like to specialize in one area or the other.

In this workshop, participants will be presented with an abbreviated version of the following information from a veteran industry expert.
INDUSTRY HIERARCHY – The basic structure of the casting industry and production industry for television, films, theatre, commercials, and new media is examined and discussed.
REPRESENTATION – There are five basic fields of talent representation that all successful actors utilize during their careers. Agents are only one of these fields. We will discuss what all five categories are, what those representatives are legally allowed to do, what they really do, what they charge, who needs them, how to find them, and when to change them.
WAGES & MONEY MANAGEMENT – This section will highlight the standard union rates for actors, and how the residual formulas work for different types of bookings. This will help provide students with realistic expectations of the potential income that can be made from an average rate of bookings in various media types.
UNIONS & REGULATIONS – We discuss the most practical SAG-AFTRA regulations, as well as some relevant legal issues regarding work in the entertainment industry as an actor. We will reveal the underlying truths behind the Financial Core status, and the differences between franchised agencies and ATA member agencies in California.
CONTRACTS – Actors may be presented with several different types of contracts during their career, and this section will provide examples and explanations of several significant documents: talent representation agreements between actors and franchised agencies, ATA agencies, and management companies.
MARKETING MATERIALS – There are many modern marketing and submission tools available to actors that can help to promote a successful career. There are also numerous scams to avoid. We’ll reveal most of the productive sources, as well as warn artists about some wasteful options they may be tempted to spend money on.

The opening monologue is the cornerstone of every late-night talk show. It’s the
foundation for everything on the program that follows and serves as a barometer for the
host as to how “hot” or “cool” the crowd might be for the rest of the night.
Writing monologue is also, out of all the components that make up a late-night talk
show, the toughest skill to master. Desk bits, sketches, games, larger studio comedy
pieces and field pieces are all about the idea; the concept; word usage and word
placement in the write-up of those longer pieces aren’t critical to the bit’s success.
They’re not about individual lines; whereas with monologue, any and every word can
make or break a joke. Monologue jokes aren’t comedy “bits”; they’re a series of topical
jokes, only 2-3 lines maximum, so those lines have to be tighter than a drum and jump
off the page. Writers who can craft great monologue jokes will have a much easier time
making strides in their careers in comedy, no matter what comedic form they pursue—
sitcoms, features, editorials, episodics, etc. Mastering the construction, formulas,
rhythm, musicality and the precise wording are absolutely necessary skills in crafting a
killer monologue joke, and after 30 years of writing, teaching and deconstructing late
night, there is no one more knowledgeable and adept at this craft than Gabe Abelson.
Whether it's Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, or Jimmy Kimmel, students will graduate
this class with the knowledge of how to write in any host's voice. Students will not only
learn what TO do when submitting monologue; they will also learn what NOT to do.
There are numerous comics and writers who have submitted to the NBC Late Night
Writers Workshop who couldn’t understand why they were turned down, but then after
studying with Gabe, easily identified the red flags in their packets and expressed regret
at not having learned what flies and what doesn’t first, before submitting. Gabe has
former Flappers students writing for almost every major talk show on the air, including a
couple of network talk show head writers. Too many “late night writing” teachers claim
to have written for talk shows in their class write-up, but in reality, just faxed jokes to the
program, freelance, and weren’t actually on the show’s staff. That doesn’t provide the
teacher with enough inside information to comprehensively prepare students for the day
in/day out goings-on of a talk show. The politics. The social aspect. Because after all,
it’s not just about landing the job. It’s about keeping it, as well. Want to learn how to
write the perfect late-night monologue joke and make your way up the television ladder?
There is no better class out there, and no more experienced teacher.

Writing For Late Night 1- Monolgoue 6pm - 8pm ZOOM
(Stand Up Writing Class)
Multi-Week Class
Mondays Nov 4th to Nov 25th
6pm to 8pm
6pm to 8pm
Flappers University Virtual Classroom1 | Burbank
Student Showcase Date: Thursday, Dec. 05, 2024 6pm
